What does it mean when car names have stuff like RX-7 in them?

Now I know that some of them are easily known like s Skyline GT-R stands for Grand Turismo Racing and some cars have names like BMW Z4 or BMW 745. What does all this stuff stand for. (I don't mean what BMW Z4 stands for but what do ALL CARS with names like these mean?).
