What is he trying to say?

I started talking with someone whom I went to school with, we hit it off almost immediately and after a month we met face-to-face. The chemistry was profound and we were having a great time then he supposedly had a mishap arise while attempting to stop by he never called to advise me though. The next day I called him and he said he didn't want to call and upset me (not calling did that immensley). Now we're not talking, I tried talking with him but he rushes me off the phone so I said I understood and would leave him alone he said that's not it he just needs to get his head straightened out but it won't change us in anyway or what we had begun. Why is he rushing me off the phone and avoiding me, he also has a personals ad running, if he wants me?
